Blues
in Dowtown Saskatoon
Tuesday, February 23, 2010
The
Blues are in downtown Saskatoon starting Thursday, February 25th through to
Sunday, February 28! So, what do the Blues have to do with jazz. Well, Honey,
if you didn't have the blues, we'd never have jazz. Someone once said: "Jazz is just the blues gone to
college, Gospel is the blues gone to church,
And the blues is life set to music!"
So...here's
what's happening for the blues life this weekend at the Saskatoon Blues Festival! On
Thursday the action starts at the Odeon
Electric Blues Cabaret (Odeon Center) with a mixture of music
between local bluesmen
Tim Vaughn Band and Three
String Fretless and eastern coast bluesman; Keith Hallet and his Band.
The Thursday night show (yes, it still only Thursday night) with a maniac
bluesman from Mississippi (did I spell that correctly?), Sonny Landreth. Sonny
has played with everyone from Jimmy Buffet to John Mayall to Bonnie Raitt.
Everybody is talking about him and you know that he'll be good. The show
promises to be bluesy, but electric blues, starting at 7 PM and going through
the night. Tickets: $25.00
On
Friday night, all ears will be leaning towards the Hilton Garden Blues Room.
Yes, the night will be acoustic, but no less tame. Fiona Boyes, award
winning blues artist from Melbourne to Memphis to Saskatoon; the Blues Music
Awards named Fiona "Traditional Female Blues Artist" of the year!
Following Fiona,
Alvin Youngblood Hart,
a musician who knows no boundaries and will give you loads to take in. Shows
start at 8 PM at $25.00 a ticket.
Saturday
night is the night that all blues fans are waiting for and the action will be
back at the Odeon
Electric Blues Cabaret. The music for the night includes
Saskatoon's own Transcontinental
Blues Band, Trevor Findlay, B.C. Read Big Band and Omar & The Howlers.
Omar promises do get everyone on the dance floor!! See you there.:) Starts at 7
PM and again, tix are $25.00 But that's not all...back at the Hilton Garden
Acoustic Blues Room the music will be steady...steady and bluesy. Saturday's
show includes Harrison kennedy, Paul Oscher and in the Cabaret Room down the
hall, it's Clayton
Linthicum, Kenny Marco
and Tim Williams Electro-fires! All shows $25.00.
Haven't
had enough?? Well, on Sunday the blues wind-up with a final show at 2 PM.
Tickets are only $10.00, at the Hilton Inn and quite honestly, you never know
you'll stop by. It's an all-artist low out event. It's a bit of a
secret...shhh, I'll see you there!

This past weekend at the Bassment was a
blast, literally. Dave Anderson, on trumpet, led the horns and Don Griffith led
the band. In fact, Don led three bands; Crawdaddio's, Zydego- go's and Dr. Don
and the Black Mamba's. The music was fantastic and celebrated the tunes of New
Orleans. Don not only led, but he played anything from the tuba to the piano,
and let's not forget the accordian. After listening all night to New Orleans'
style music, and cheering on the limbo event that was a hit, I left feeling revived
and ready for more...more accordian music was what I really craved.
And so I went searching on line! I found
exactly what I was looking for – jazz meets accordian!
Recently released, a brand new cd from Wynton
Marsalis entitled: From Billie Holiday To Edith Piaf 2009 (Jazz
in Marciac/Harmonia Mundi) featuring Richard Galliano on...accordian.
Jazz
impresario Wynton Marsalis created a special tribute to two of the most soulful
and real vocalist of the jazz world; Billie Holiday and Edith Piaf, and did it
with the help of Richard Galliano on accordian. Recorded in Marciac, France,
the cd is under the Harmonia Mundi label and boasts the fabulous music from an
era long ago, but certainly not forgotten. Looking for some jazz, accordian
style, try Wynton Marsalis - From Billie Holiday To Edith Piaf.
On another
note, and with another style, we have a fabulous show coming to the Bassment.
The Abrams Brothers are going to be at the Bassment on Friday, February 19th.
Arlo Guthrie, the legend himself, recognized the talent of these two
youngsters after he first heard them playing his own songs at one of his shows
and thought they were “way too young to be playing that good.” Tickets are only
$10.00 for members, $8.00 for non- members. For tickets call: 653-2890.
See you at the Bassment!

Jazz This Week - February 8-14th |

Yikes!
Can't believe it is 'hump day' already, mid of the week and I haven't written
about jazz in Saskatoon last week or for this upcoming weekend. Why? I think
I'm still recovering from the very hot jazz that filled the air last weekend.
Brad Turner Trio wowed the jazz audience at the Bassment. His touch to the
piano was magical and when he took to the trumpet, 'Wail, wop'...he blew us
away. Bernie Arei was on drums, smoothing the skins and sending a vibe, but
truly it was Simon Fiske that stole the stage. Simon not only had the right
touch on those bass strings, but his smile ensured us that he was glad to be
there, playing for us and having a whole lot of fun! The audience was small and
for the talent on stage it made me wonder..."Jazz lovers, where were
you?".
But the
fun didn't stop there. On Saturday, Feb.6th the Bassment hosted the music of
Skip Kutz Trio with Shelley Ewing at vocals. Shelley only gets better and
sweeter with age....just like a good wine. I LOVED sitting back and listening
to her vocals and style. Before the night was through, Shelley gave up the mic
to special guest, Kenny Colman, who just happened to stop in at the club with
Brad Turner at his side. While the time was short, the music was sweet, and
showed us one more time that....you never know who'll stop by the Bassment! I'd
say it's worth hanging out theree just in case....:)
This
weekend, it's Mardi Gras time at the Bassment, so....Get out your maw maws and paw
paws for this great weekend because son of a gun we'll have big fun!
Mas dats true, yeah!

|
Wednesday, 10 February 2010 |
On Friday, February 5 down at the
Bassment Jazz Club, 202 4th
Ave. N, the Brad Turner Trio from Vancouver will be
presenting. A
talented trumpeter, pianist, drummer and composer, Brad Turner is one of Canada's
most-in-demand musicians. Brad has performed and /or recorded with such artists
as Joe Lovano, Kenny Werner, John Scofield, and Gary Bartz. In 1999 he
won a Juno for Best Contemporary Jazz Album recognizing his work in the internationally
acclaimed electric jazz group Metalwood. Joining Brad will be Simon
Fisk - bass and Bernie Arai - drums.
Tickets
are only $10.00 with all proceeds going to the Saskatoon Jazz Society. When I recently asked
someone if they will be at the Bassment to see the show, the response was..."Are
you kidding, Shelly? It will be a ‘killer show'. You'll want to be there...I know
I will be.
On Saturday, February 6th, jazz man, Kenny
Colman will be performing at the St.
Thomas Moore College President's Gala. Kenny Colman's
career longevity comes from a never-say-die spirit -- and a little help from
his friends. Along the way, he had friends like Frank Sinatra "who counted
me in his fraternity of the saloon singers, who told me just to keep singing,
and became the best agent I ever had." Another boost came from retired
beer baron Freddy Heineken, who spent a "bundle" producing
Dreamscape, Colman's 1994 "legacy album." The Saturday performance
will include trumpeter-pianist Brad Turner.
Show
includes d fabulous dinner and an evening of exciting jazz entertainment.
Tickets $225 per
person with all proceeds going to the St. Thomas Moore
College bursaries and
scholarships.
